Was “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” her favorite phrase, or just our favorite saying about her? If she didn’t want something to happen, it simply didn’t. Yet she was the most magnanimous of hosts, and when she smiled, there was no warmer place in the world to be.

Could you please post a recording of her saying that? I've tried it around here and I must be doing it wrong because all I get are blank stares, then everyone continues whatever they were doing in the first place.
It wasn't in her tone of voice. It was the fact that everyone knew the repercussions of going against her will. She could make people so, so miserable with very little effort, and any who had been on the receiving end of her displeasure were not likely to go there again. It would have been horrible had the complete opposite not been the the case the vast majority of the time.
