202 of 210 : Thelonious

One Step Down was legendary. Long and narrow, with perpetual clouds of cigarette smoke and the sweetest jazz you've ever heard. One night I ended up there and was invited to sit and drink with a couple of Thelonious Monk's old bandmembers, who shared stories of his talent and temper.

I once sat and politely didn't drink with a fellow who hid for a week in Sun Ra's house while making his way to Canada so he wouldn't have to go to Viet Nam.

Sun Ra hid him. He said his wife was the nices lady. He was caught there when he made the mistake of calling his father to tell him he was fine. His father told the FBI.

He spent the next two years as a Medic dispensing LSD in Grapefruit juice to anyone he considered overviolent.

He dispensed a lot of LSD.

Sad I never got there. And lucky you. And good Sun Ra story, Adamus!
