17 of 210 : Lois and Caroline
Lois and Caroline were the first lesbians I ever knew. Family friends and business clients of my father, I even worked in their boarding kennel for a few years. They’d been “married” for decades, but their breakup was so painful that now neither can bear to speak the other’s name.

It was nearly as painful for us, their friends. We never learned what happened, really. Caroline went on to marry a man (after nearly 30 years of being in a monogamous relationship with a woman), but she didn't meet him until a couple of years after the breakup, so he wasn't a factor.
